"I have had the No.10v Engine for 5 years, and it has run on an average five nights a week, six hours a night. I am running the engine in our town on Saturday night for the Hospital, so I want it to be at its best, and show them what the Stuart No. 10 can do, and the workmanship of your parts.

Design

This is literally a miniature No.1. Almost every feature is replicated in small size. Other than the number of bolts used to secure each part the only differences are; a combined Eccentric Strap and Rod No Valve Rod Guide and the steam inlet being mounted to the front of the Valve Chest Cover. This is very common with the early version. Later engines had the S logo cast into the rough round recess.

A customer writes with reference to hiss No. 10 Horizontal Engine which has been driving a dynamo for the past year very successfully, but needs a few renewals :—
In reply to our query as to the size of dynamo the engine was driving, he states ;— " My dynamo is an 8 volt 4 amps, which lights a reading bracket for the head of two beds in different rooms. They are 4 volt pear shaped bulbs, and do excellent work. The engine works from my boiler at an average of 40-lbs. per square inch, and has a good power, and runs at an enormous speed, starting on its own when not in dead centre."
C. W. D. , South Africa writes :—
"I received set of No.10 Castings. Thank you for your prompt attention. I cannot express how satisfied I am with the e=set. It is perfect in every detail.

July 1st, 1923

N. K. writes :—
"I may say that some time ago I purchased a No.10 Horizontal Steam Engine set 3/4-in. for x 3/4-in. stroke from you which when finished, turned out to be a very sweet running and powerful little plant, and delighted everyone to whom I showed it. Although having no previous knowledge of steam engineering, the finishing of your machined castings set did not present the slightest difficulty, every part being so accurately turned out by you."

12th February, 1925

F. B. F. writes :—
"I now have your No. 504 Boiler put together and think it is a first-rate steamer as I have got it driving an S.50 Engine and Dynamo. The exhaust steam is then taken to a pair of No. 10 Horizontal Engines made upright and left-hand coupled together, thus using the steam like a compound engine. Am very pleased with all the goods you have supplied."

1st February, 1925

W. B. writes :—
"I received the No. 504 Boiler and fittings as ordered, and I must say that I am very pleased indeed with them, and I thank you for your prompt delivery. I have one of your No. 10 Engines which I got about 10 years ago , so now I have got what I wanted for a long time."

The popularity of the STUART No. 10, one of our earliest models, has been enormous - we have sold ,any thousands.
The demand for one of these engines is as great as ever, so we have decided to bring the design thoroughly up-to-date. The illustrations show the engines in their new and improved forms and we expect they will prove to be more popular than ever.
It will be seen that the trunk form of guide has been adopted ; it is easy to machine, and of great assistance in "lining up" the engine when erecting. So great is the simplicity of machining and building this model that it presents no great difficulties to the beginner, and we are now supplying castings and parts in the rough as well as fully machined sets.

An 8-page booklet of instructions tells how to erect and finish the machined sets.

The builder of in machined sets will find a complete working drawing , fullydimensioned in the booklet. He is however expected to possess and know how to use a lathe, and to have a fair outfit of tools. Otherwise, he should buy Set "A" or Set "B."
THE VERTICAL ENGINE, fitted with a disc Wheel, is an ideal engine for marine purposes for ordinary or flash steam, and is a splendid alternative to the "Sun", when weight is a consideration, or the space limited. It also replaces the Stuart "Simplex", now long obsolete, but often asked for.

The New Design, fitted with the Stephenson reversing gear made available a few years later.

Design

The new design replaces the original Standard & Rod with a Trunk guide in the form of an inverted "Y". This design change simplifies machining and construction. For a full comparison of the design changes Stuart has made to vertical engines check out Evolution V page.

C. H. writes :—
"I should like to mention that 12 years ago I purchased one of your sets of castings ('Stuart' No. 10v). This engine still runs splendidly at a rare speed; the only things being renewed are the gudgeon pin and a little white metal which I ran into the crankshaft bearings, which had worn only slightly after hundreds hours running.
This engines a source of great enjoyment to my son, who was born during the year I built it. I think this is a great tribute to the excellence of your castings and materials."
